<image:title>Lucie's Journal - OK Winter, I’m ready (ish) for you! - They are fascinating and often misunderstood creatures that play a crucial role in Africa's ecosystems. The family Hyaenidae includes four species: the spotted (or laughing) hyena, the striped hyena, the secretive brown hyena, and the smaller and insectivorous aardwolf. The spotted hyena is the largest and most often sighted species, and the one you’re most likely to see and hear on safari. The striped hyena is much more nocturnal, I’ve only seen them a couple of times in daylight. Brown hyenas are also nocturnal and whilst they are widespread they are hard to see - Namibia’s Skeleton coast is a good place to find them as they prey on the seal colonies there. Aardwolves are insect eaters, mainly feeding on termites, and you can spot them in grassland in the Kalahari. Hyenas have some of the most powerful jaws in the animal kingdom, which help them crush and eat bone. While they are often thought of as scavengers, spotted hyenas are skilled hunters, with up to 95% of their diet coming from animals they kill themselves. They hunt in highly organised packs, bringing down prey much larger than themselves. Socially, spotted hyenas live in complex matriarchal societies where females are larger and more dominant than males. These clans can consist of up to 80 individuals, making them one of the most socially complex mammalian species. Hyenas communicate through a wide range of vocalisations, including their famous "laugh," which actually signals social status or excitement. Despite their reputation as villains in popular culture, hyenas are vital to maintaining the health of ecosystems by controlling herbivore populations and alongside vultures acting as the clean up crew, which helps prevent the spread of disease.</image:title>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - OK Winter, I’m ready (ish) for you! - Q&A - Can I stay connected on a safari?</image:title>
<image:caption>Don’t take connectivity for granted, it’s always good to check what your communication options will be before you go away, or even before choosing a lodge. For those of you wanting a complete digital detox a safari is a brilliant option. In many African countries internet access is difficult or expensive or both! Some camps, particularly in Botswana, are proudly Wi-Fi free so if you really need to disconnect your kids let me know and we’ll choose one of these If it’s important to you to stay connected it’s possible to do so almost everywhere, although internet speed is usually a lot slower than UK speeds, and rarely suitable for streaming video, but more than adequate for Instagram and Facebook gloating. Some camps restrict access to in room only, while others only have wi-fi in public areas, so again, its worth checking before you choose a lodge. Another way to stay online is to purchase a local sim card. This has worked well for me in South Africa and Kenya which have good, reliable mobile phone networks. Or, if your phone will take an eSim you can use apps such as Airalo to buy a local virtual sim. Charging points are available in all camps, although in more rustic or remote camps these will be dependent on solar and might only be available in public areas. At the other end of the spectrum some camps have vehicles equipped with usb points and 3 pin plugs which is really handy if you’ve forgotten to charge your camera batteries before setting out. Just in case of emergencies I always take a power bank with me like this Anker one which doesn’t weigh much and is good for a couple of charges of my phone or iPad. <image:caption>This month’s special offer is a little different I recently upgraded my old Canon Digital SLR camera to a flashy new mirrorless version (R7 if you’re interested – I love it and it’s far cleverer than I am!) and I wanted to try out a telephoto lens, so for my Zambia trip I hired a lens from lensesforhire.co.uk and I was so impressed by their service that I’ve negotiated a special discount code for my clients, so if you would like to elevate your safari experience with a great camera and or lens let’s chat and I’ll send you the code. My hired lens helped me capture this lovely leopard - which I’m quite pleased with</image:caption>

The inevitable shortening days and fading light hit me quite hard, and it helps a lot if I have some heat and light to look forward to (more on that later). It’s no coincidence that my thoughts have turned to Active Safaris where outdoor pursuits are the highlight, and to Namibia where the skies are huge and blue and bright almost all year round! This month I’m also writing about the usual Safari FAQ and as always some very special offers, so please read on for more!</image:title>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - Leaves & temperatures are falling - Getting out of the vehicle adds an entirely new dimension to a safari. Whether it’s a gentle morning bush walk , or an adventurous 3 night canoe trip down the Zambezi camping on sand islands in the river, or horse riding through the wilds of the Okavango Delta, there is something active to do in virtually every safari destination – here are my ideas for the best!</image:title>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - Leaves & temperatures are falling - Q&A - What happens on a day on safari?</image:title>
<image:caption>Safari days follow the timetable of the wildlife, so usually run as follows: Pre-dawn, you’ll get a wake up call and possibly some tea or coffee delivered to your tent. Meet your guide at the mess tent for more hot drinks and a snack or light breakfast before boarding your vehicle and heading out. It pays to be early as it’s cool (or even cold!) and predators are still active. Almost all the camps I use take around 6 passengers per vehicle so you will be sharing with other guests, unless you’re a group of 6 or you’ve booked a private vehicle. Your guide (and tracker if you have one) will literally read the road - the Bush Telegram - to see what tracks are around and interpret them to find out what’s happened overnight. The early vehicles get to see the road before tyre tracks obliterate the news! A morning drive lasts from before sunrise through to about 10am, depending on what you see. Most will break for a coffee halfway through the morning and this is your chance to have a pee behind a convenient bush once your guide has checked the area for safety. On returning to camp you’ll have the chance to freshen up before brunch or lunch. You then have the early afternoon to relax - catch up on some zzz’s, laze around the pool, edit your photos. At about 3pm you’ll be summoned for Afternoon Tea - yep, more food - before jumping into your vehicle at 4pm for your afternoon/evening drive. Afternoon drives are when the animals start to stir as the temperature drops, and if you’ve found predators earlier in the day you might return to find them becoming active. At sunset you’ll stop somewhere lovely for a safari essential - a Sundowner and some light snacks - before heading back to camp in the dark using a spotlight to catch sight of nocturnal animals. Back in camp you’ll have a delicious dinner and then have the chance to sit around the campfire swapping tales with your fellow travellers before getting an early night ready to do it all again tomorrow!! There are slight variations on this theme. Some camps offer all day game drives taking a picnic lunch, others will cook you a fab bush breakfast served up under the shade of a tree. Others will offer you the opportunity to take a morning walking safari, or maybe a short guided walk around camp in the afternoon and most camps will do their utmost to accommodate any special wishes that you might have.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - The Dog Days are here - How many days should you spend on safari?</image:title>
<image:caption>When I’m planning safaris the first question I get asked is ‘How many days should we spend on Safari?’ The simple answer is as many as you can afford! Sounds a bit glib but it’s true. I don’t feel like I’ve experienced a camp or location properly unless I’ve had a 3 night stay. This is really the minimum stay that I would recommend and should suit those on a tighter budget. It gives you 2 full days of safari activities, so if you want to max your experience you could squeeze in 4 game drives, a night drive and an afternoon bush walk (location dependent). If you have a bit more budget to spend then it’s wonderful to have a 2 or 3 centre safari with 3 nights (or more) at each location. Examples of that could be Okavango Delta and Chobe River Front in Botswana followed by Victoria Falls, or South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi in Zambia and in Kenya the Masai Mara and Laikipia Plateau or Samburu. If you can’t stretch to a longer safari but still want to be away for a decent length of time the best way to dilute the cost is to spend some time in a less expensive location. There are plenty of gorgeous beach hotels in Zanzibar, Kenya and Mozambique, or if you’re in Botswana or Zambia you could visit Victoria Falls which has plenty of well priced accommodation and lots of activities. The other extreme would be to be ‘on safari’ for the whole of your 14 day holiday, and the best way to do this without breaking the bank is a Namibia Self Drive holiday. You won’t be game viewing everyday as Namibia is more about wilderness than wall-to-wall wildlife, but it’s a superb way to enjoy a longer holiday in Africa and see some great game viewing without spending a fortune. Sorry, I may have raised more questions than I’ve answered but I’m here - give me a call and we can talk over different options!</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - It’s Peak Safari Season - what are we doing here?</image:title>
<image:caption>No kidding! The safari season has hit it’s full stride, the Great Migration is in full swing as the herds cross from Serengeti to the Mara, in Botswana the flood waters of the Okavango are filling the dry channels, and the weather is just glorious just about everywhere (even here at time of writing), I know where I’d rather be It’s not too late though, I have some great late availability - read on! I’ve only been back from Tanzania a few weeks and I’m already craving big blue skies and wide open spaces and thinking about my next trip. I came back to reality with a bang as the biggest trade event for the African Travel Trade - Experience Africa - took place last week in London where i met up with lots of old friends and made some really interesting new contacts as well. More on that later. In this blog I’m writing a bit more about where I stayed during June’s Tanzania trip, and what I thought made them special. I’m also reviewing where’s good for the rest of the year, including October half term, bring you some new special offers and late availability, and take a look at what you should, and shouldn’t take on safari! It’s good to have you here, and thank you for reading - please let me know what you think!! As usual all photos - good, bad and fuzzy - are my own.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - It’s Peak Safari Season - what are we doing here? - Where’s good for October Half Term?</image:title>
<image:caption>October is a brilliant time to travel! East Africa - Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique all enjoy great weather at this time of year. If you love the heat then Zambia and Malawi are also good destinations at this time and have better availability being slightly more off the beaten track. South Africa is a great October half term destination too - it’s coming into Spring and new life is everywhere as impalas give birth to leggy fawns. October is considered shoulder season in many destinations making it better value than peak summer months, although it still sells out quickly so get in touch if you’d like an Autumn break.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - It’s Peak Safari Season - what are we doing here? - What to pack and what to leave behind??</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most frequent questions I get asked is what to pack. Because a safari is unlike most other holidays it does require a bit of extra planning, especially if you’re travelling by light aircraft and have a weight limit of 15Kg. It’s not that tricky though, so let’s look at what’s essential and what’s not! Pith helmet definitely optional</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m always being asked where is my favourite place for safari, and while this is a moveable feast Zambia is consistently in my Top 3. Landlocked and sitting slap-bang in the centre of the Southern African landmass it is an outstanding Safari destination, offering unspoiled wilderness, huge concentrations of wildlife, and it can be budget friendly too as well as fabulously luxurious if you prefer!</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - May-be you’re thinking about a safari? - As well as game drives and walking safaris Zambia also offers horse-riding safaris, canoeing expeditions on the Lower Zambezi and even the option to e-bike at some camps!</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve canoed on the Zambezi twice, both trips were about 3 or 4 days in length, and involved camping out overnight on sand islands in the middle of the river. I loved the adventure and can highly recommend it if you are not averse to roughing it a bit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - May-be you’re thinking about a safari? - As the weather heats up the wildlife becomes easier to see as it congregates around water. Elephants crossings of the Luangwa River are frequent and drying lagoons make for some great hippo sightings as fractious males battle to defend their shrinking territories.</image:title>

<image:title>Lucie's Journal - May-be you’re thinking about a safari? - Your Safari Questions answered!</image:title>
<image:caption>When is the best time to book a safari? The answer is, either a long time in advance or at the last minute! It really depends on what your safari is ‘for’ and how many of you there will be travelling. If your dates are fixed it makes sense to book as far in advance as possible. If you’re impulsive however, there are some brilliant offers for last minute travellers. If you’ve always thought that a safari is beyond your budget you might be wrong!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tanzania is where my safari obsession began, my very first trip to Africa was a ‘Small Group Adventure’ tour in 1997 - visualise 12 people in an unreliable minibus! It was a memorable trip for all sorts of reasons, buy me a drink sometime and I’ll tell you the unpublishable bits! In spite of the various highs and lows it was certainly an adventure and it had a life changing effect on me, visiting some incredible off the beaten track wild places, seeing some amazing wildlife and experiencing the thrill of fly-camping in the bush for the first time. The rest is history…</image:caption>

<image:title>The Big African Adventure Diaries - September 2008: Leaving Europe & Tunisia - As I write, we’re aboard the ‘Splendid’, steaming South over a flat calm sea under blue skies. It already seems a long time since we left Henley on a very Autumnal morning last Sunday. Our journey thus far has been a blast. We got an earlier ferry than planned on Sunday and made it as far as Troyes that night, finding the campsite we’d aimed for. On Monday night we got to the Haut Jura, and it was so cold we couldn’t face cooking outside so went for a pizza. I hadn’t fully considered the implications of camping at 3000ft in September. We slept that night in pyjamas and under all available bedding, and even the hardy ancient French camping contingency we met in the shower block were complaining of the cold. The complications of re-trousering in a wet 2’ x 2’ shower cubicle defy description – the closest comparison I can think of would be doing tai-chi in an upturned canoe. Elsie, the tent and all the kit have performed above and beyond expectation with the notable exception of Sean & I, who no little thanks to GPS technology, have not had a single scrap. All hail Garmin! They should be mandatory issue for all couples. Tonight we arrive in Tunis, at about 8pm and face the arrival bureaucracy – reputed to take up to 3 hours, but relatively straightforward compared to what we face in other countries.</image:title>

<image:title>The Big African Adventure Diaries - September 2008: Leaving Europe & Tunisia - To prepare ourselves for the start of the BAA we’re heading to Sidi Al El-Mekki for a couple of days for a bit of a lie down. We’ll try and update the blog once a week, and or whenever we can get internet access and have something to blog about, but if you don’t see any new material after about a fortnight we’ve probably been eaten by hyenas, or the Garmin’s failed.</image:title>
